Abstract
De Poli deals with the fact that Arab television channels provide heterogeneous portrayals of women, a spectrum of representations and models of women that is as varied as it is disorienting. This engenders an overlap of different body semantics. In fact, at the opposite ends of the whole phenomenon we find, on the one hand, the most conservative “ideal type,” shaped according to the standards of reactionary Islam, and, on the other hand, the most open-minded (or transgressive) models, in conformity with international globalized media products. Focusing on current conflicts and tensions between local and global trends, the primary aim of this chapter is to analyze the various strategies employed by different television channels, in accordance with financial and political interests, to produce contemporary portrayals of women.
