Abstract

Cis-[PtCl2(PPh3)2] and [PtCl2(PP)] (PP = Ph2P(CH2)1, 2 or 4 PPh2) are synthesized by treating H2[PtCl6]·H2O with an excess of phosphine in EtOH; by the same procedure, except for the presence of aqueous formaldehyde, trans-[PtCl2(PPh3)2] can be prepared. By pressuring H2[PtCl6]· 6H2O and an excess of PPh3 with carbon monoxide and molecular hydrogen in EtOH trans-[PtHCl(PPh3)2] is obtained; in the presence of propene, even without molecular hydrogen, trans-[PtCl(COPrn)(PPh3)2] forms. All the above complexes are prepared in good yield.

Although reaction of PPh3 with K2PdCl4 and the ligand p-methoxyphenylsulfonyl dithiocarbimate gives high yield of the cis-product 4, somewhat, fortuitously reaction (iv) gives crystals of trans-Pd(PPh3)2(SH)2, 4a as a minor species. This reaction to form 4a possibly proceeds [34] via the minor precursor complex trans-Pd(PPh3)2Cl2 [35,36] formed during the course of the reaction according to Scheme 3. The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, IR, electronic absorption, 1H, 13C and 31P NMR spectra and the single crystal X-ray diffraction.
